Common problems & fixes

Most ClockX issues are caused by Windows security features or display settings and are easy to resolve.

Install Installer blocked by Windows SmartScreen

SmartScreen warns about programs from publishers without a paid code-signing certificate. ClockX is safe — it has been distributed since 2007 without issues.

Fix: In the SmartScreen dialog, click More infoRun anyway.

Alternative: right-click the downloaded .exeProperties → check Unblock at the bottom → OK, then run the installer.

You can also verify the file independently by uploading it to VirusTotal before running.

Display Clock not visible on desktop after install

ClockX may be running but its window is minimized, off-screen or behind the desktop layer.

  1. Check the system tray (bottom-right corner) — right-click the ClockX icon → Show
  2. If no tray icon: open Task Manager → check if ClocX.exe is running → if yes, right-click → Bring to front
  3. On Windows 11: right-click the clock → uncheck Pin to desktop, then re-enable it
  4. If the clock is off-screen: right-click the tray icon → Reset position
Alarms Alarms don't ring or make sound

ClockX plays alarm sounds through Windows audio. If alarms are silent:

  1. Check Windows volume — make sure the system volume is not muted
  2. Right-click the clock → Alarm → open the alarm settings — confirm the alarm has a sound file assigned
  3. Make sure the alarm time is set correctly (check AM/PM if using 12-hour format)
  4. Check that ClockX is still running in the background — it must be running for alarms to fire
  5. Try re-assigning the sound file: click the sound field in alarm settings → browse to a .wav file

See the full alarms guide for detailed alarm configuration.

Performance High CPU usage

ClockX normally uses very little CPU — a few percent at most. If usage is high:

  1. Right-click the clock → OptionsAnti-aliasing → set to Off or Method 1 (Method 2 is most CPU-intensive)
  2. Reduce the clock size — larger clocks with anti-aliasing require more rendering
  3. If you have many alarms configured, review and delete unused ones
  4. Try switching to a simpler skin (BMP skins are lighter than PNG)
Settings ClockX doesn't start with Windows

Right-click the clock → OptionsGeneral → enable Auto-load with Windows. Two options are available: current user only, or all users on the machine.

If it was enabled but stopped working: some antivirus software or startup managers remove ClockX from startup. Re-enable it in ClockX Options, then check your antivirus startup settings.

Full instructions in the startup guide.

Settings Wrong time or time zone displayed

ClockX reads the system clock and timezone from Windows. If the time is wrong:

  1. First check your Windows time is correct: Settings → Time & Language → Date & Time → Sync now
  2. If the timezone is wrong: in the same screen, change Time zone
  3. For world clock instances showing wrong time: right-click the clock → OptionsWorld Clock → verify the timezone assigned to each instance

See the world clock guide for multi-timezone setup.

Display Clock disappears after Windows update

Windows updates occasionally reset startup entries or change display scaling. To restore:

  1. Open ClockX from Start menu manually
  2. Right-click → OptionsGeneral → re-enable Auto-load with Windows
  3. If the clock appears too large/small after an update: right-click → OptionsSize → adjust the zoom level
Install Antivirus quarantined or deleted the installer

Some antivirus products flag unsigned executables from independent publishers. ClockX is clean — it's been published since 2007 without malware reports.

To proceed: open your antivirus quarantine, restore ClocX160_x64.exe, and add an exception for the ClockX installation folder (typically C:\Program Files\ClocX). Then run the installer again.

If you want to verify first, upload the file to VirusTotal.

How to uninstall ClockX

ClockX uninstalls cleanly and leaves no leftover files or registry entries.

  • 1

    Right-click the clock and exit

Right-click the ClockX clock on your desktop → Exit. This closes ClockX before uninstalling.

  • 2

    Open Windows Settings → Apps

Press Win + IAppsInstalled apps. Search for ClockX or ClocX in the search field.

  • 3

    Click Uninstall

Click the three-dot menu next to ClockX → Uninstall → confirm. The uninstaller runs and removes all ClockX files.

Alternatively: Control PanelProgramsUninstall a program → find ClockX → Uninstall.

  • 4

    Optional: remove leftover settings

ClockX stores user settings in the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ClocX. To remove them completely, open regedit, navigate to that key and delete it. This is optional — the settings folder is tiny and harmless.

See the dedicated uninstall guide for full step-by-step instructions with screenshots.

Frequently asked questions

Is ClockX safe to download and install?
Yes. ClockX has been developed by Bohdan Rylko and distributed through clocx.net since 2007. The installer contains no adware, spyware or toolbars — the developer explicitly states this. Which Windows versions does ClockX support?
ClockX 1.6.0 (64-bit) supports Windows 10 and Windows 11. The 32-bit build also runs on Windows XP SP2, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1. See the Windows 11 compatibility guide for details.
How do I change the clock skin?
Right-click the clock → Style. A list of installed skins appears. The full install includes 400+ analog and digital faces. See the skins guide for details on customization.
How do I set an alarm in ClockX?
Right-click the clock → Alarm. Click New to create an alarm. Set the time, choose a sound or action (play audio, show window, run app, shutdown), and optionally set a recurrence schedule. Click OK to save. Full instructions in the alarms guide.
Does ClockX collect personal data?
ClockX the application collects no personal data — it runs entirely locally on your machine with no network calls. This website uses Google Analytics 4 with your explicit consent only (via the cookie banner). See our privacy policy for full details.
How do I update ClockX to the latest version?
ClockX has no auto-updater. To update: download the latest installer from the Download page, run it — the installer will replace the existing installation. Your settings and alarms are preserved. See the update guide for step-by-step instructions.
Can I use ClockX on multiple monitors?
Yes. ClockX can be placed on any monitor in a multi-display setup. Drag the clock to the desired monitor — it remembers its position across restarts. For world clock instances, each can be positioned independently on different displays.
Where is the ClockX settings file stored?
ClockX stores settings in the Windows registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ClocX. Alarm sound files are referenced by path — if you move the audio files, re-link them in the alarm settings. There is no separate config file on disk.
