ClockX as a Windows Gadgets replacement

Windows Gadgets — including the desktop clock gadget — were discontinued in Windows 8 and completely removed in Windows 10 and 11. ClockX is the cleanest modern replacement: same desktop presence, more features, actively maintained.

What happened to Windows Gadgets?

Windows Gadgets (also called Windows Sidebar) were desktop widgets introduced in Windows Vista. They included a clock, weather widget, calendar and other mini-apps that floated on the desktop.

Microsoft discontinued Gadgets in Windows 8 (2012) citing security vulnerabilities in the platform. They were completely removed in Windows 10 and Windows 11. The official recommendation was simply to stop using them — no replacement was provided.

This left many users without a desktop clock, which is where ClockX comes in. It was available even before Gadgets were discontinued and has continued to be actively maintained.

More features

The original clock gadget just showed the time. ClockX adds alarms, timers, world clock, 400+ skins and a calendar — all in a similarly compact floating widget.

Safe and maintained

Windows Gadgets were discontinued due to security vulnerabilities. ClockX is a standalone C++ application with no shared gadget platform — no security concerns, and actively maintained.

Works on modern Windows

Windows 10 and 11 block legacy gadgets entirely. ClockX installs and runs perfectly on both, including on the latest Windows 11 builds with the new taskbar.

Common questions

Can I still use Windows Gadgets on Windows 10 or 11?
Not officially. Microsoft removed Gadgets support in Windows 8 and it is fully absent from Windows 10 and 11. Third-party tools that re-enable gadgets on modern Windows exist but are unsupported, potentially unsafe, and may stop working after Windows updates. ClockX is the clean modern alternative.
Is ClockX exactly the same as the old clock gadget?
Not exactly — ClockX is better. It is a standalone application rather than part of the Gadgets platform. It has more clock styles (400+ vs a handful), full alarm support, timers, world clock and better transparency control. The desktop presence is similar: a floating, always-visible clock.
How do I make ClockX look like the old Vista clock gadget?
Several ClockX skins replicate the visual style of classic Windows clock gadgets. Right-click the clock → Style and browse through the analog PNG skins. You can also download additional skin packs from clocx.net that include retro styles.
