Windows Gadgets — including the desktop clock gadget — were discontinued in Windows 8 and completely removed in Windows 10 and 11. ClockX is the cleanest modern replacement: same desktop presence, more features, actively maintained.
Windows Gadgets (also called Windows Sidebar) were desktop widgets introduced in Windows Vista. They included a clock, weather widget, calendar and other mini-apps that floated on the desktop.
Microsoft discontinued Gadgets in Windows 8 (2012) citing security vulnerabilities in the platform. They were completely removed in Windows 10 and Windows 11. The official recommendation was simply to stop using them — no replacement was provided.
This left many users without a desktop clock, which is where ClockX comes in. It was available even before Gadgets were discontinued and has continued to be actively maintained.

The original clock gadget just showed the time. ClockX adds alarms, timers, world clock, 400+ skins and a calendar — all in a similarly compact floating widget.
Windows Gadgets were discontinued due to security vulnerabilities. ClockX is a standalone C++ application with no shared gadget platform — no security concerns, and actively maintained.
Windows 10 and 11 block legacy gadgets entirely. ClockX installs and runs perfectly on both, including on the latest Windows 11 builds with the new taskbar.
